About The Department
The Sociology Department at Prof. S. Nurul Hasan College was established in 1994, initially offering a General Degree in Sociology. The department began with just one full-time lecturer. Over time, the department expanded, and in 2001, it introduced the Honours Course. The department welcomed two part-time teachers in 1998, and another full-time faculty member joined in 2008. At present, the department has four teaching faculties, all working under the University of Kalyani. The department has a rich academic legacy and focuses on providing a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of human society.
Sociology, as a field, delves into the study of human society. The department emphasizes that society cannot be studied in isolation, confined within the limits of classroom teaching. To foster a holistic understanding, the faculty members adopt diverse teaching methods. In addition to traditional classroom teaching, the department encourages interactive discussions and debates, and efforts are made to use ICT in the teaching-learning process. These methods enable students to grasp the intricacies of social structures and dynamics more effectively.
Application of computers, especially PowerPoint presentations, are made by faculty members. Tutorial classes are taken up. These classes help to develop a healthy bond with the students of the department. Students present papers on topics taught or any other topic of social relevance where they get an opportunity to express themselves. This liberty to express themselves helps them to develop their writing skills that reflects in Departmental Wall-Magazine. Group discussion and ‘in-room seminar’ motivate them to analyse critically, which helps to develop their observational skill.
Moreover, they are encouraged to organize and participate in cultural programmes, helping them channel their creativity and leadership abilities.
The department takes pride in making the 3-4 years that students spend in the college memorable and fruitful, ensuring personal, academic, and professional growth.
